Home > Cat Arthritis Syndrome

Two of the most common feline arthritis symptoms are lack of maneuverability and irritability.

Cat Arthritis Symptoms - Lack of Maneuverability

As cats get older and exercise decreases, maintaining healthy bones and proper weight becomes an issue. Healthy strong bones are vital to preventing pet arthritis.

This unfortunate occurrence is usually the result of pet owners who become slack in the “play with your pet” department. As a result, cats gain weight and lose their range of motion. This leads to the degeneration of the skeletal joints. Keeping bones healthy can be achieved through running and exercise with cat toys.

As weight gain increases and the exercise decreases, degeneration of the skeletal joints (arthritis) might start to kick in. The cartilage (lubricant) between your cats’ bones will start to erode, as it does in humans. This leads to pet pain, swelling, and ultimately; irritability.

Cat Arthritis Symptoms - Irritability

As your cat experiences more pain from the progressing arthritis he/she will become more and more irritable. They will not want to be held as this will put excessive pressure on their aching and deteriorating joints. Your cat might acquire a fever and experience a loss of appetite. Frequent hissing and lack of compassion from your cat may arise.

Prevention and Treatment

It is important to monitor your pet’s health.  When a cat shows signs of arthritis the disease has already progressed. A healthy diet and steady exercise will prevent pet pain and make your cat a happier pet.

The following should be adhered to:

  • Maintaining a healthy diet
  • Proper exercise
  • Love (a little love goes a long way)
  • Normal visits to the vet

Remember cat arthritis symptoms will be mild at first therefore it is important to monitor your cats behavior.
